Salmon oil is one of the most popular dog supplements on the market — and also one of the most inconsistent. Some bottles are pure wild-caught oil with clearly disclosed EPA/DHA levels. Others are diluted, farmed, or so vague about their ingredient sourcing that you have no idea what you're actually buying.

We dug into the labels, sourcing claims, and real-world results to find the options actually worth buying.

What We Looked For

Not all salmon oils are equal. Here's the framework we used to evaluate each product:

1. Source matters — wild-caught vs. farmed

Wild-caught Alaskan salmon has a better omega-3 profile and lower contamination risk than farmed Atlantic salmon. We prioritized products that clearly state "wild-caught" and specify the fishery.

2. EPA/DHA concentration per serving

This is the most important number, and many brands obscure it. A product listing only "total omega-3s" rather than breaking out EPA and DHA specifically is often hiding a lower active dose. We looked for products that disclose these numbers.

3. Ingredient simplicity

The best salmon oils have one ingredient: salmon oil. Some add vitamin E as a natural preservative (acceptable). Others add synthetic antioxidants, filler oils, or flavor enhancers — red flags we filtered out.

4. Palatability

A supplement your dog won't eat is worthless. Salmon oil is generally well-accepted, but formulation and freshness affect how well dogs take to it.

5. Value

We compared cost per effective dose (based on EPA/DHA mg per dollar), not just sticker price.

How We Picked

[Expand this section with your actual testing methodology once you have products to evaluate. Describe how you sourced products, how long you evaluated them, and what your evaluation process looked like.]

We reviewed product labels, verified sourcing claims where possible, and assessed real-world user feedback across verified Amazon reviews. Products with less than 100 verified reviews were excluded from consideration.
